Day by Day Itinerary
10-day planIslamabad to Chilas
Travel north on the Karakoram Highway with planned stops and an overnight stay in Chilas. This is a long mountain-road transfer, so meal and washroom stops are planned around daylight, traffic and the route that is actually open.
Max altitude 1,265 mChilas to Karimabad
Stop at selected mountain viewpoints before an evening walk in Karimabad Bazaar. The Indus corridor, Nanga Parbat viewpoint and Rakaposhi viewpoint are considered en route, with stops selected according to visibility and safe parking.
Max altitude 2,438 mHeritage day
Heritage day. Timing remains flexible enough to respond to local access, weather and the confirmed interests of the travellers. For Heritage day on day 3, the guide explains the local history and allows unhurried time in the lanes, gardens and viewpoints; fort entry and any community visit follow the opening hours and rules in effect that day.
Max altitude 2,850 mUltar Meadow day hike
Walk from Karimabad into the gorge beneath Ultar Sar and Lady Finger Peak. The walking plan uses a conservative pace, scheduled hydration stops and a turnaround time suited to altitude, weather and the group's condition.
Max altitude 3,300 mHopper Glacier
Explore Nagar Valley and the Hopper Glacier viewpoint; any closer glacier walk requires a local guide and suitable conditions. Nagar-side roads and glacier viewpoints are assessed locally; any walk beyond the normal viewpoint requires suitable footwear and a safe turnaround time.
Max altitude 2,800 mAttabad to Gulmit
Boating and Hussaini Bridge; overnight Gojal. At Attabad Lake, any boating stop proceeds only when wind, lake conditions and the selected operator allow a safe departure. For Attabad to Gulmit on day 6, the programme leaves time for the shoreline and viewpoints rather than treating the lake as a quick roadside stop; any boat ride is optional and subject to safe operating conditions.
Max altitude 2,500 mBorith to Passu hike
Hike from Borith Lake to the Passu Glacier viewpoint; afternoon at Passu Cones. Upper Hunza stops are spaced between Gulmit, Hussaini and Passu so the day does not become a rushed sequence of roadside photographs.
Max altitude 2,850 mKhunjerab Pass
Border day in the national park. The guide confirms access, expected conditions and any suitable adjustments before the group leaves the hotel or meeting point. For Khunjerab Pass on day 8, the border viewpoint sits at high altitude and can be cold even when Hunza is mild; the driver uses conservative stops, and the final turnaround follows road, weather and visitor-access conditions.
Max altitude 4,693 mGulmit to Gilgit / Naltar
Descend with an optional Naltar jeep excursion. For Gulmit to Gilgit / Naltar on day 9, upper Hunza stops are spaced between Gulmit, Hussaini and Passu so the day does not become a rushed sequence of roadside photographs.
Max altitude 3,050 mReturn to Islamabad
Complete the drive south with scheduled comfort and meal stops. The final transfer keeps a sensible buffer for the agreed train or flight time, while any optional stop depends on the remaining daylight and traffic. How fit do I need to be?
If you can hike 3 to 5 hours at a relaxed pace, every walk in this plan is achievable; each hike also has a skip-and-drive alternative.
Can this become a real trek?
Yes: swap the day hikes for the Rakaposhi Base Camp or Patundas treks; see our trek packages.
Is this tour completely private?
Yes: your own vehicle, your own driver and guide, and departure on any date you choose. No strangers, no fixed seats, and the daily plan flexes to your pace.
Can the trip begin at Gilgit Airport?
Yes: fly Islamabad to Gilgit (tickets booked at cost) and we start the itinerary from the airport, trimming the road days. A road backup is always planned in case mountain weather cancels the flight.
What happens if a domestic flight is cancelled?
Mountain weather cancels a share of Gilgit and Skardu flights, so every fly-based plan carries a costed road backup that activates automatically: you may lose a day, never the trip. Road-based itineraries are unaffected.
Is Khunjerab Pass included?
Yes: the itinerary includes a Khunjerab Pass day (4,693 m, China border), open roughly May to late November. In winter we substitute Naltar Valley snowscapes.
