Khunjerab Pass Guide — Road, Altitude & Border Timing

Road & Season

The pass generally opens from May to late November, weather depending. The road is fully paved but climbs fast beyond Sost — allow 2.5–3 hours from Gulmit each way, plus stops. Winter tours substitute Naltar Valley when the pass closes.

Altitude Tips

You gain over 2,000 m from Hunza in a single morning, so drink water, skip heavy breakfasts, and limit time at the top to 1–2 hours. Most healthy visitors feel only mild breathlessness; our vehicles carry oxygen for comfort and the descent resolves symptoms quickly.

At the Border

Expect the border gate photo op, friendly Chinese and Pakistani border posts, grazing yaks, golden marmots and — famously — the highest ATM in the world at the National Bank kiosk. Foreigners pay a small Khunjerab National Park entry fee; keep your passport handy at checkpoints.

Wildlife

Khunjerab National Park protects ibex, blue sheep, marmots, golden eagles and the elusive snow leopard. Dawn drives offer the best sightings — tell your guide if wildlife is a priority and we’ll time the day accordingly.
