Gulmit Village Guide — Wakhi Culture Capital of Gojal
Wakhi Gojal
Above Attabad the language, food and dress change: this is Wakhi country, connected culturally to the Afghan and Tajik Pamirs. Gulmit’s carpet-weaving centre, traditional Wakhi house museum and women-run enterprises make it the best single stop to meet the culture.
The Ondra Fort Hike
A stepped 30–45 minute trail climbs to the ruined Ondra Fort platform: Passu Cones one way, Attabad’s blue the other, Gulmit’s orchard grid below. It’s the finest effort-to-view ratio in Gojal and glorious at sunset.
Village Walks & Food
Old Gulmit’s lanes hold century-old houses and apricot-drying roofs; local cafés serve Wakhi specialties like molida and gral. The historic Silk Route polo ground anchors the village centre.
Staying & Touring
Gulmit makes the ideal upper-Hunza overnight — the 7 Days Khunjerab, 12 Days China Border and all trek packages sleep here. Hotels run PKR 6,500–13,000/night; see our hotels list for Gulmit options.
