What To Buy

Hunza’s honest specialities: dried apricots and apricot oil, walnuts and mulberries, hand-woven Wakhi caps and shawls, embroidered patches, and gemstones — ruby, aquamarine, tourmaline — from the surrounding mountains. Reputable gem dealers issue receipts; your guide knows which.

Cafés With Views

Rooftop cafés along the upper bazaar frame Rakaposhi and Diran over coffee; famous stops serve walnut cake, apricot cake and proper espresso. Evening is golden: peaks alight, bazaar lamps on, valley cooling.
