Older Than Baltit

Altit is the original seat of Hunza’s ruling family, predating Baltit Fort. Its watchtower rises straight from a sheer river cliff — a defensive masterpiece — and the restored complex won conservation awards after the Aga Khan Trust for Culture’s careful work.

The Royal Garden & Kha Basi

Below the fort, the restored Royal Garden hosts the Kha Basi Café, run by local women — apricot cake, traditional dishes and one of the nicest lunch stops in the valley. The old village lanes around the fort remain lived-in, not museum-piece.

Visiting Tips

Combine Altit with Baltit and Ganish in one heritage day; allow 1.5–2 hours here. Morning visits are quieter; the tower-top river view is the classic photo. Tickets include a local guide.
