Hunza is a lived-in valley: terraced villages, orchards and 7,000 m walls above a turquoise river — intimate and photogenic at every turn. Skardu is bigger and wilder: broad Indus plains, lunar deserts, huge lakes and the gateway feel of K2 expeditions. If you want charm, pick Hunza; if you want scale, pick Skardu.

Roads & Access

The KKH to Hunza is fully paved and comfortable year-round; Babusar adds a scenic summer option. Skardu’s road is now also excellent but longer from Islamabad, which is why many fly one way — the Skardu flight over Nanga Parbat is itself a highlight (with weather cancellations to plan around).

Both peak May–October. Hunza offers blossom (April) and autumn gold (October) as special seasons; Skardu’s trump card is Deosai, open roughly June–September. Winter favours Hunza, which stays reachable and hotelled.
