In short: Hunza is a high valley of the Karakoram in Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Pakistan — a former princely state on the old Silk Road, famed for 7,000-metre peaks, thousand-year forts, remarkable literacy and longevity, and some of the warmest hospitality in Asia.

Geography

The Hunza River carves the valley between the Karakoram’s giants: Rakaposhi (7,788 m), Ultar Sar, Ladyfinger Peak and Distaghil Sar all stand over central Hunza, with the KKH threading through to the 4,693 m Khunjerab Pass. Three zones matter to travellers: Lower Hunza (Ghulmet–Aliabad), Central Hunza (Karimabad, 2,438 m) and Upper Hunza/Gojal (Gulmit to the border).

History

For a millennium Hunza was an independent princely state ruled by the Mirs from Baltit Fort, taxing Silk Road caravans whose graffiti still marks the Sacred Rocks. The state acceded to Pakistan in 1947 and retained internal rule until 1974. The Karakoram Highway (completed 1979) transformed the valley from remote kingdom to Pakistan’s premier mountain destination.

People, Languages & Faith

Three languages share the valley: Burushaski (a linguistic isolate related to no other language on Earth) in central Hunza, Wakhi in Gojal, and Shina in lower Hunza. The community is predominantly Ismaili Muslim — outward-looking and education-focused, with literacy above 95%, among Pakistan’s highest, and women visibly leading businesses everywhere.
