A green, pine-forested valley above Gilgit famous for its alpine meadows, a winter ski slope, and a chain of vividly coloured high-altitude lakes.
Naltar sits up a jeep track from Nomal, north of Gilgit, and feels a world away from the arid Karakoram below — think pine forest, grassy meadows and grazing horses. It is one of the few places in Pakistan with a ski slope, run by the Pakistan Air Force, making it a rare winter destination as well as a summer escape.
Beyond the main meadows, a rougher track leads to the Naltar Lakes — a cluster of small alpine lakes whose water shifts through turquoise, blue and green depending on light and season. Satrangi ("rainbow"), Blue and Bashkiri lakes are the best known and a highlight of any Naltar trip.
A bumpy but spectacular 4x4 ride up to the multi-coloured lakes above the meadows.
Easy strolls through pine forest and grassland, ideal for families.
Naltar's slope is Pakistan's premier ski spot, with a national ski championship held here.
Reflections in the lakes and forested slopes make Naltar one of the region's most photogenic valleys.
