Chapursan Valley

One of Hunza's most remote and atmospheric side valleys, running west from Sost toward the Afghan Wakhan Corridor — home to the Wakhi people and the revered Baba Ghundi shrine.

Where is Chapursan Valley?

Chapursan branches off the Karakoram Highway near Sost in Upper Hunza (Gojal) and runs north-west toward the border with Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor. It is one of the last inhabited valleys before the frontier, and its villages — Kirmin, Reshit, Zood Khun and others — are among the most isolated in Hunza.

The people here are Wakhi, with their own language and traditions, and are known for extraordinary hospitality to the few travellers who make the journey.

Things to see & do

Baba Ghundi Ziarat

A revered shrine near the head of the valley, dedicated to a saint said to have travelled from Afghanistan; a place of pilgrimage and quiet beauty.

Wakhi villages

Stay in a family guesthouse and experience Wakhi culture, food and music in Zood Khun or Reshit.

Glaciers & peaks

Raw, treeless high-mountain scenery with glaciers spilling toward the valley floor.

Wakhan views

On clear days you can sense the frontier with Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor and, beyond it, Tajikistan.

Good to know

The road is rough and weather-dependent, so a local driver and guide are strongly recommended. There is limited electricity and no mobile signal in much of the valley — part of its appeal. We can add Chapursan to an Upper Hunza itinerary for travellers wanting genuinely off-the-beaten-path Pakistan.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Chapursan Valley safe to visit?

Yes — it is a peaceful Wakhi valley. The main considerations are the rough jeep road and remoteness, so travel with a local driver and allow a flexible schedule.

Do I need a permit for Chapursan?

No special permit is generally required for the valley itself, but as it is a sensitive border area we keep to established routes and arrange a local guide.

How many days do I need?

Plan at least one overnight; two nights lets you reach Baba Ghundi and soak up the Wakhi villages without rushing the rough road.
