ATMs & Currency in Hunza

Travel PlanningHunza Travel Guide
← All Hunza travel guides
In short: Pakistan runs on Rupees and Hunza runs substantially on cash: but ATMs exist in Gilgit, Aliabad and Karimabad, cards work with us for package balances, and currency exchange is straightforward if you plan one step ahead.

Where the ATMs Are

Karimabad and Aliabad have bank ATMs (occasionally empty on peak weekends); Gilgit has full banking. Beyond Attabad, assume cash only. The famous “world’s highest ATM” at Khunjerab is real: and a photo op more than a plan.

Cards & Payments

Your written quotation confirms the available balance-payment methods. Hotels increasingly take cards; restaurants, jeeps, tickets and bazaars are cash. Budget PKR 1,500 to 3,000/person/day for meals outside packages ().

Exchanging Money

Exchange at Islamabad airport or authorised dealers; USD, GBP, EUR, SAR and AED all convert easily. We help international guests exchange on arrival as part of pickup.

Verification and Official Sources

Travel conditions can change after this guide is updated. Before departure, verify visa rules through the Pakistan Online Visa System, highway access through the National Highway Authority, and local notices through the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan. Confirm flights directly with the operating airline.
