Places to Visit in Ghizer Valley — Top 8 Stops
The Lakes
1) Phander Lake — Ghizer’s masterpiece: a mirror of poplars and peaks, best at dawn from the PTDC ridge. 2) Khalti Lake — turquoise in summer, famously frozen solid in winter (locals walk across), trout beneath year-round. Both sit right on the main road.
The Villages & Side Valleys
3) Gakuch — Punial’s hub and lunch stop. 4) Gupis — riverside orchards and the bridge views. 5) Yasin Valley — the deep side-valley for travellers who want zero tourism: ancient forts’ remains, glacier heads and genuine welcome. 6) Phander village — stay a night; the lake at first light repays it.
The High Finale
7) Shandur Pass (3,700 m) — the world’s highest polo ground, a lake-dotted plateau open roughly June–October, wild camping heaven and festival ground each July (festival tour). 8) Trout everywhere — farms and river catch; Ghizer trout lunch is obligatory.
Route & Timing
Gilgit → Gakuch → Gupis → Khalti → Phander is a gorgeous 5–6 hour drive; add Yasin (+1 day) and Shandur (+1 day, seasonal). Roads are paved to Phander, rougher beyond. May–October is the season; autumn colours in late October are Ghizer’s secret best.
