The Gilgit River drains a valley system — Punial, Gupis, Yasin, Phander — collectively called Ghizer, ending at the 3,700 m Shandur plateau. It is greener, softer and quieter than the Karakoram valleys: less vertical drama, more pastoral perfection.

Phander Lake’s still-water reflections, trout fishing (Ghizer is Pakistan’s trout capital), the drive itself — one of the loveliest in the north — and the route to the each July. Yasin and Gupis add side-valley wandering far from any crowd.
